General ledger

The general ledger is the central accounting record of a company.

It contains all the financial transactions over the life of the organisation, and serves as the primary source for preparing financial statements, such as the balance sheet and income statement. The general ledger is organised into several accounts that track assets, liabilities, equity, revenues, and expenses.

Each entry in the general ledger is recorded in two places as a debit and a credit, which keeps the accounting equation balanced (Assets = Liabilities + Equity). This system of accounting is referred to as double-entry bookkeeping. The general ledger provides a comprehensive snapshot of a company’s financial health by summarising all financial activity in one place.
